BELYI, Autograph Manuscript of a Poem.
|
BELYI, Andrei (1880-1934). Autograph Manuscript of a Poem. Moscow: 1918. One page handwritten manuscript (in Russian) on a narrow quarto sheet, in the distinctive hand of Andrei Belyi, unsigned but dated: 1918. Moscow. A strong, distinctively symbolist poem of four stanzas and sixteen lines, beginning, "Vsvoi glaza sploshnie sinerody," and reading, more or less, in English: "In your eyes, born pure blue/please take me,/make the past, the talking years/come down./In your eyes the water and dry land are glittering /I jump into them./From your eyes I ignite into souls/like calm verse./And the heart like a crazy bird/in silent supplication /let it fly from the chest /the prison of tears toward you./We bright, shining children/in an unexpected hour/between us he, the third, the unknown /don’t be afraid of us." Belyi is among the most important and most curious writers of his era. His magnum opus, the novel Petersburg, is regarded by all as the great Russian novel of the Twentieth Centuty, and by Vladimir Nabokov as the second greatest novel of that century overall. Very good.
