BORGES, Jorge Luis. Holograph Manuscript of the Book Review, "Manuel Maples Arce. Andamios interiores. Mexico, 1922." 1922. Three 11cm x 16cm sheets, hand-numbered. Published originally in the first Proa magazine, No. 2, December 1922, and later reprinted in Inquisiciones, 1925. Maples Arce was the founder of Estridentismo, the first vanguard movement to come out of Mexico. Borges praises his poetic imagery, and foresees its lasting effect as a symbol of the "new mode of writing". Wrong he was, in that the movement is now but a footnote in the history of hispanic letters, but then again, Borges's own vanguard movement at the time, Ultraísmo, suffered a similar fate, as did all other Latin American avant-gardes. The text is a review of the Mexican poet's book. Borges feels "some admiration" for Maples Arce, and describes the book in a language that appears at times to imitate the Estridentismo it represents. He concludes that this title will be noticed as a "lively example of the new manner of writing," a manner whose origin he ascribes to the now forgotten Colombian-born poet Eduardo Talero (d.1920). Borges has made seven corrections and has signed it at the end.
