GREEN, Henry. Blindness. London: J.M. Dent and Sons, 1926. Octavo, 254pp. First edition of the first book by the idiosyncratic British master, published when he was still an undergraduate at Oxford. The story of a young man blinded on his way home from boarding school and machinations of his worried stepmother to get him married off at all cost -- except, naturally, that of his social class. Green is among the great masters of the British modernist novel, belonging, in the words of V.S. pritchett, "to the mad tradition in English literature -- Sterne, Carroll, Firbank, and Mrs. Woolf." John Updike calls Green "a novelist of such rarity, such marvelous originality, intuition, sensuality, and finish, that every fragment of his work is precious, as casting a reflected light upon his achievement." A very good copy in publisher's cloth-covered boards, somewhat sunned along the spine, and with some peculiar light violet offsetting to the free endpapers -- at first glance it would appear to be damp-staining, but it actually seems more the trace of some sort of make-shiftbook-cover. The present copy is inscribed by Green to fellow novelist Janes Hanley, "For James Hanley from Henry Green 11/7/31." Hanley and Green share an undeserved obscurity, which has been much redressed in the case of the latter in recent years. Of Hanley, Green once said he was superior to Conrad. Books inscribed by the reclusive Green are rare.
