AKHMATOVA, Anna (1889-1966). Typescript Poem, Signed. 1945. Quarto. Two-page carbon typescript manuscript entitled "From The Leningradski Elegies," signed by Akhmatova and dated: 1945. Fontanny Dom. September 2. (The date presumably refers to the date of composition and not to the creation of this particular document, which is more likely to have been made in the early sixties.) Signed by Akhmatova in blue pencil. During the many years in which the divine Anna was prohibited from publishing her poetry, she would circulate her manuscripts among her circle of friends in this samizdat form: five carbons could be made at a time, and the distribution of such typescripts often provided the only contact many poets in her situation could establish with the deep tradition of Russian poetry and with its vital pulse. The present typescript emanates from a member of the inner circle. Very good.

ALEXEIEFF, Alexandre. Illustrations for André Malraux's La tentation de l'Occident. Paris: 1970. 45.2 x 31.5cm (17 3/4" x 12 3/8"), image size 23.5 x 17cm (9 1/4" x 6 11/16"). A suite of seven color engravings, produced using the electrolytic deposition process, invented by Alexeieff himself in 1950, and considered one of the major technical innovations in modern engraving. The images were created to illustrate the novel entitled La tentation de l'occident for its incarnation in the first edition of the Collected Works (Paris: Gallimard, 1970) of Alexeieff's long-time friend Andre Malraux. The present separate suite was created for the deluxe issue and is number 58 of 90 copies. Each of the images is signed and hand-numbered by Alexeieff, and protected by a tissue guard. Contained in the original plain paper portfolio. Fine.

(ALTMAN, Nathan.) OLESHA, Yuri. Zavist. (Envy). Moscow/Leningrad: Zempa i Favrika, 1928. Octavo, 141pp. First edition of one of the greatest short novels of the Twentieth Century, and one of the greatest works of modern Russian fiction. Envy portrays the world from the perspective of two resentful "failures" under the Soviet system -- who would indeed have been failures under any system. Their animus is directed against two "good Soviets," of no great distinction beyond the facts that the narrators know and envy them. Although not much happens, the way in which it doesn't places the novel prominently in the great Russian satirical tradition as well as in the mainstream of the western art novel, an achievement that seems to have been all but impossible under the yoke of the Soviet state. The work is as fresh and compelling now as when it was first published. Although 6000 copies were printed, the present is among the scarcest important works of literature of its day. Wonderfully illustrated by Nathan Altman. Some restoration to publisher's illustrated wrappers, especially along spine and at spine ends, but about very good. We have looked actively for this title for years, and this is the first copy we have been able to offer, or in fact, have seen offered.
