GUILLEN, Nicolas. España. Poema en cuatro angustias y una esperanza. Valencia: Ediciones Espanolas, 1937. Duodecimo, 39pp. First edition of this little collection of poems lamenting the death of Lorca and Republican Spain. A rather poor copy, wrappers foxed and upper wrap stained, spine secured with black tape at an early date, upper wrap torn along joint created by outer margin of the tape, but a wonderful association copy, inscribed by Guillen in the year of publication to his mentor Lino Dou . A former lieutenant colonel in the Mambí Army, Dou was of mixed Chinese and African descent. In 1930 he convinces the editor of the "Ideales de una raza" to request poems and articles from Guillén. In no small way, this fact was responsible for his return to the poetic endeavor which he had abandoned earlier. Later, Lino Dou becomes the director of the "La marcha de una raza" section of the newspaper El Mundo'.

HIMES, Chester. Le Fin d’un primitif. Paris: Gallimard, 1956. Small octavo, 315pp. First French edition, in a translation by Yves Malartic of this early novel by one of the unsung masters of American literature in the latter half of the century, a long-time exile in Paris. The book appeared as a pulp in the previous year under the title The Primitive, an autobiographical work which Himes considered one of his best. It relates the drunken interracial affair between a failed black author and a white woman executive. An unopened very good+ copy in publisher’s printed wrappers. Inscribed by Himes, "For M. Marcel Duhamel who gave the push which made this French edition come true — my thanks and appreciation. Salut et freternité, Chester Himes, Paris, April 5, 1956." An excellent association copy.
