ARLT, Roberto. El jugete rabioso. Buenos Aires: Editorial Latina, 1926. Small octavo, 170pp. First edition of the first book by one of the greatest virtually unknown writers of the 20th Century. A less than very good copy, bound in a simple blue cloth with the cover illustration of the book affixed to the upper board. The upper wrap has been bound in, but it and the first blank have been severely trimmed with the attendant loss of Arlt's complete last name from the cover. The first blank is rubbed through where a name has been erased. However, this copy has been inscribed by Arlt at the head of the first chapter, "A Leon Meyer Gleizer, mu(y) cordialmente. Roberto Arlt. 21-4-33. B. Aires." The last letter of "muy" has also been trimmed.

ARLT, Roberto. Group Photograph, Signed. n.d. 5" x 7" black and white photograph taken at a dinner in celebration (according to text affixed to the verso) of Arlt's reception of the prestigious Municipal Prize for his novel Los Siete locos, in July of 1932. In addition to Arlt and local luminaries, the photograph includes likenesses of the authors Julio Barcos, Elias Castelnuovo and Ricardo Llanes. Amid smiles, self-satisfaction or simple rigidity, Arlt's countenence is a model of consternation, and appropriately so for the author of The Seven Madmen. Photograph in very good condition, affixed to an old mount which is worn at the corners. Arlt has signed in the upper margin of the mount with his characteristic flourish. We had intended this precious image to preside over the meetings of The Roberto Arly Society but, sadly, we are forced to recognize that we will never found it.

ARLT, Roberto. Manuscript Autobiographical Sketch with a Self-Caricature. n.p.: 1931. One single sheet from a notebook, glued onto a typed transcript of the contents. A candid and humorous mini-autobiography by this Argentine off-the-wall avant guard writer. Almost as if he were filling in a form for a dating service, Arlt describes himself under eight different categories: Physical description ("31 years old," "brown hair," "bad spelling," etc.); Literary achievements ("3 novels, a municipal prize," etc.); Education ("third grade," "diverse occupations"); Psychological description ("changing moods," "very few needs," "convictions: none,", etc); Defects ("vain, like all writers," "selfish," etc.); Virtues ("absolute sincerity; self-confidence; quiet acceptance of failure and disillusion"); Potential ("If he works hard and is not spoiled by success, he will be a writer with considerable social reach"); External judgment ("For some, a cynic; a bitter man to others, to myself, a man on his way to everlasting inner peace"). This self-description offers a view of Arlt from an angle other than his literary work and existing biographies. Whereas any writer that ever wished to inflict an autobiography on the world tended to write an entire book, Arlt significantly chose to jot down this unique self-description in a small, torn notebook page, as if his modesty -- be it true or Borgesean -- demanded that his life story not occupy unnecessary space. Highly significant as well, is the full-body, ink self-portrait, which leans heavily toward caricature; but such duality should come as no surprise, as the autobiography below it shares it duality as well – as indeed do the sublimely ridiculous characters of his literary masterpieces Los siete locos and Las lanzallamas.
