Vintage silver gelatin print (6 ¾" x 8 ¾") of the great one-time Surrealist poet and member of the French resistance, taken quite early in his career, at around the time when he published his first major collection of verse, Le marteau sans maitre. Signed "Man Ray 1933" in the lower right hand corner. Stamp from the photographer's famous Montparnasse studio on verso, "Man Ray 31bis rue Campagne-Premiere, Paris -- 14e." With an inscription in the hand of Mady and signed by both her and Foujita in English and Japanese, "Pour Juan P. 	VYTLACIL, Vaclav. Original Artwork. 1970. 6" x 10 ½" mixed-media in contemporary black frame. A drawing in gouache and pastel by this important, somewhat neglected, figure in the history of modernist painting. With its bold white and yellow strokes and stylized figure, the drawing recalls European primitivism, but filtered through a distinctly postwar American sensibility. Vytlacil was an American painter of Czech descent who taught at Black Mountain College, among other places. His most notable students include Robert Rauschenberg and Louise Bourgeois, and he was a close colleague and friend of Willem De Kooning. Signed and dated by the artist in pencil.
